Hello everyone, street photographers!
Many times, you've heard me say that I usually photograph more than one subject in a scene, seeking contrasts and visual narratives that capture the viewer's attention. Photographing a person just because they are "someone" doesn't always generate impact. As street photographers, we must be selective, creative, and sometimes a bit provocative, photographing what others wouldn't dare.

When to Photograph a Single Person?
But does this mean you can't frame a single person? Of course not! You can and should do it if the conditions allow it. If it’s a person whose expression, momentary reaction, or emotion catches the eye, then it's worth photographing. If you see that it is a unique emotion or moment, don't hesitate to capture it.
The Magic of Capturing a Single Person
Look at the photo in this post. Here we see a man walking in the rain, holding an umbrella in one hand and a rifle in the other. How many times have you seen something like this in your life? Probably very few, if ever. This man is not accompanied by anyone or anything that contrasts him, except for the unexpected context of carrying a rifle and an umbrella at the same time. These kinds of scenes are exceptional, and that's why they deserve to be photographed.
Uniqueness in Street Photography
On social media, we often see photographs of a single person who are in the image just for being people. A woman with an umbrella, a child walking, or a man with a hat. But what does that photo mean? Does it convey something to the viewer? Before shooting, think twice about the story you want to tell and how it will be perceived by those who see it. Could you sell that photo? If it doesn't have a clear message or palpable emotion, it might not create the desired impact.
Final Reflection
Street photography is an art of observation and capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary. Don't be afraid to photograph a single person if the situation warrants it. Always look for the story behind the image, the emotion it conveys, and the uniqueness of the moment.
Until next time, and happy shooting!
